How to ask for an honest review after the work is done

Ask customers for an honest review with a neutral message, a verified destination, and a consistent process that does not filter by expected rating.

The purpose of a review request is to invite a customer to describe a real experience in their own words. It should not tell them which rating to choose, suggest that only happy customers should respond, or send unhappy customers down a separate path that hides the public review option.

Google's current contribution policy prohibits incentives for reviews and selective solicitation of positive reviews. It allows asking about genuine experiences without trying to influence the rating or review content. Build the request around that distinction before you worry about tone. Start with a fictional completed service

Cedar Repair has completed a fictional chair repair. Enter Cedar Repair in Business name, Alex in Your first name, and “the chair repair” in What you do for them. Use example.com/review in Your Google review link for the practice run only.

The checked generator run inserts these details into text, email, in-person, and reminder drafts. It normalizes the example address to https://example.com/review. That example address does not prove a Google review destination exists. Before using your own output, open the actual review link and confirm it belongs to the correct business listing.

Treat generated wording as an editable draft. Remove any inherited template phrase that conditions the request on happiness, asks for a particular rating, claims a guaranteed completion time, or tells dissatisfied customers to contact you instead of reviewing. The final invitation should be available regardless of the rating you expect.

REVIEW CHECKLIST
- Use a consistent milestone after a genuine customer experience, regardless of expected rating.
- Verify that the link opens the correct business listing.
- Never offer incentives or condition the request on satisfaction.
- Do not require a private survey before showing the public review link.
- Check communication permission and stop after a decline, opt-out, or completed response.
- This tool drafts language; it does not send messages or create reviews.

Review the wording, verify the listing link, and invite honest feedback without trying to influence the rating.

What this assumed

  • Never offer anything in exchange for a review. Most platforms remove them and some regulators treat it as deceptive.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

A draft, not a final document

This tool assembles a working draft from what you entered. Read it once before you send or post it, and change anything that does not sound like you. You are responsible for what you publish.

How to run it, step by step

  1. 1Use a real service description. Fill Business name, Your first name, and What you do for them with appropriate details for a genuine completed experience.
  2. 2Verify the review destination. Paste the correct listing link into Your Google review link. Open it before sending anything.
  3. 3Make the request neutral. Edit the drafts to invite honest feedback without rating conditions, incentives, or a separate path for dissatisfied customers.
  4. 4Apply the same process. Use a consistent completion trigger and record requests so customers do not receive duplicate or unwanted messages.

How to read what it gives you

  • The tool drafts requests; it does not send them or create customer reviews.
  • A correct link and neutral wording do not replace the separate communication-permission check.

The tool is free, it does not expire, and you can put it on your own website if you want it there. Nothing on this page is locked.

Copy a neutral request

For a customer who is eligible to receive the message through your chosen channel, use this short version:

Hi, this is Alex with Cedar Repair. Thank you for trusting us with the chair repair. If you would like to share your experience, you can leave an honest review here: [verified review link]. Your feedback is welcome either way. Thank you.

An email can use the same request with a plain subject such as “Your Cedar Repair experience.” Keep the main action visible. You do not need a long explanation about how much the business needs five stars.

For an optional reminder, use:

Hi, Alex with Cedar Repair again. Here is the review link in case you wanted to share your experience: [verified link]. No need to reply, and thank you again for your business.

A reminder is optional, not an entitlement to attention. Do not send it when the customer has already responded, declined, asked not to be contacted, or otherwise made clear that the conversation should stop.

Choose a consistent trigger

Use a process milestone you can apply consistently, such as completion and customer handoff. The trigger should not depend on whether an employee thinks the customer will praise the business. Do not require a private satisfaction survey to unlock the public link.

Staff can still address service problems. Make the support route available to everyone and keep it independent from the review invitation. A customer should not have to choose between getting help and leaving an honest public account.

Do not ask staff to write customer reviews, draft a customer's opinion for them, or coach them to mention selected names and keywords. The customer owns the account of their experience. Your business owns the quality of the invitation and its response to feedback.

Keep a small request record

Copy these headings into an internal sheet: service completion date; request eligibility; channel; approved script version; request date; optional reminder date; opt-out or decline recorded; responsible staff member.

Use the minimum information needed to avoid duplicate messages. Do not turn a public review into a new place to store private job details. In a public response, avoid identifying the customer's address, invoice amount, health information, or other details they did not choose to disclose.

Review-platform rules and communication permission are separate checks. A neutral request can still be inappropriate if sent through a channel the person should not receive. Confirm the actual provider's requirements and your existing consent process before sending, especially for automation.

The free Review Request Script Writer helps you prepare the language. The optional Google Review Kit adds related signage, request scripts, and response materials if your business needs a broader set. No purchase is required to use the neutral templates here.

Your next step is to verify the real listing link, approve one neutral request, and apply it consistently. A drafted message is not a sent message, and a sent request is not a review. Keep those outcomes separate when you assess the process.

Questions people actually ask

Can I offer a discount for a review?

Google’s current policy prohibits incentives in exchange for posting, revising, or removing a review. Keep the request independent of any reward.

Can I ask only customers who said they were happy?

Do not filter the public review invitation by expected rating. Use a consistent process for genuine customer experiences.

Should the tool’s draft be sent unchanged?

Review it first. Verify the destination and remove unsupported timing claims, rating conditions, or language that diverts negative feedback.
