The bigger package deserves a quick calculation before it gets space in the cart. Compare what each option costs for the same quantity, then ask whether you will use that quantity. Those two checks answer different parts of the shopping decision.
The free Grocery Unit Price Calculator handles the first check. You supply the second. A lower price per ounce does little for the household if a large part of the package goes unused or the purchase crowds out something needed today.
Match the measurement before the price
Use the same unit for both sizes. Sixteen ounces and forty ounces are comparable as entered. One pound and forty ounces are not comparable until you convert the pound to sixteen ounces. Choosing Ounces in the tool does not perform that conversion for you.
The UK government's consumer unit-pricing guide explains unit price as the cost of equivalent weights or volumes. That arithmetic works independently of currency. It also explains why the biggest pack can carry the higher unit cost.
Check the product itself, too. A concentrated cleaner and a ready-to-use bottle may need a cost-per-use comparison. Two foods with different edible portions may need more context than package weight. For this walkthrough, assume the packages contain the same product in the same usable form.
A fictional shelf comparison
Option A contains 16 ounces and costs $4.80. Option B contains 40 ounces and costs $10.00. Enter those numbers and choose Ounces.
Option A costs $4.80 divided by 16, or $0.30 per ounce. Option B costs $10 divided by 40, or $0.25 per ounce. The difference is $0.05 per ounce. Divide that difference by the more expensive $0.30 unit price and the smaller unit price is 16.6667% lower, displayed as 16.7%.
The larger package wins this unit-price comparison. It also requires $5.20 more at checkout than buying one small package. Unit value and today's checkout amount should both stay visible, especially when a shopping list has a firm spending limit.
Understand the annual number
Set How many you buy a month to 3. The tool uses the package size of the lower-unit-price option. Here, that means three 40-ounce packages, or 120 ounces a month. At Option A's unit price, that amount costs $36. At Option B's unit price, it costs $30.
The modeled difference is $6 a month and $72 across twelve months. The calculation compares equal quantities. It does not mean replacing three small packages with three large packages automatically saves $72, because those purchases contain different amounts.
It also assumes prices and demand remain unchanged. Buying only whole 16-ounce packages may leave inventory between shopping trips. Treat the annual result as a way to understand the price gap at a stated consumption level, not as a promise about your bank balance.
Compare the same amount of the same product
Enter the package size and price using a single measurement for both options. The unit selection labels the calculation; it does not convert mixed units.

- The tool does not account for spoilage, package-only purchasing constraints, different product quality, or an extra trip to another store.

Test the usable amount
Suppose only 30 ounces of the 40-ounce package get used. The $10 purchase now costs about $0.3333 per used ounce. That exceeds the small package's $0.30 per ounce if the smaller package is fully used.
For the $10 package to match $0.30 per used ounce, you must use about 33.33 ounces: $10 divided by $0.30. That leaves roughly 6.67 ounces available for waste before the original price advantage disappears. This is a separate hand calculation; the tool does not estimate spoilage or tell you how long food is safe to keep.

Use the price you actually qualify for. A promotion requiring multiple purchases should be recorded with that condition. A membership price should not be compared as though every shopper can access it at no additional cost.
Finish with one product you buy regularly. Once the quantities and assumptions are clear, save the comparison for your next trip and update the prices. A repeatable ten-second check is more useful than assuming the same package will always win.

No. Both numbers must already be in ounces. The selector labels the unit used for the calculation.
Which package count does the yearly estimate use?
It uses the size of the option with the lower unit price, multiplied by the monthly count, then compares that quantity at both unit prices.
Can the smaller package still be the better choice?
Yes. The amount you can use, available cash, storage, travel, and product suitability matter alongside price per unit.
