What this assumed

  • Every figure is treated as a normal month. Annual bills like insurance or property tax need dividing by twelve first.
  • The 50, 30, 20 comparison is a rule of thumb, not a standard.

Not financial advice

This is an illustration, not personalized financial advice. It does not account for your full financial picture, and nobody here is your financial advisor. Talk to a licensed professional before acting on a number from a free calculator.

What this tool actually does for you

Who it is for

Anyone running a household budget: parents, couples, roommates, or somebody doing this on their own for the first time.

The problem it points at

Money comes in and money goes out and the account is empty before the next payday, but nobody has ever written the whole thing down in one place.

What you walk away with

One page showing every category, what share of your take-home it eats, and the number left at the end of the month.

How to use it

Set the goal, adjust the numbers, and work the plan week by week.

  1. Enter what actually lands in the account each month, after tax.
  2. Fill in each category from your last two or three statements, not from memory.
  3. Look at the share column. Housing above about a third is where most budgets break.
  4. Print it or download it and put it somewhere both of you can see it.

Questions people ask

Is my information saved anywhere?

No. This runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, stored, or put in a link. Close the tab and it is gone.

What is the 50, 30, 20 guideline?

A common rule of thumb: roughly half of take-home on needs, a third on wants, and the rest on saving and paying down debt. It is a starting point for a conversation, not a rule, and it does not survive a high cost-of-living area intact.

Should I use gross pay or take-home?

Take-home. Budgeting off gross pay is the single most common way people end up short every month.
